To the Juneau Community:
Thank you for the outpouring of interest in helping the Rock Dump find a permanent location. Recently, there was an inadvertent launching of a GoFundMe webpage to support the Rock Dump and we have temporarily suspended that effort.
A brief explanation is in order . . . Matt Cecil, a former Juneau resident, built the Rock Dump and opened it in 2001. He lived there and managed the gym for our community at large. In 2008, he moved to his hometown in Massachusetts and eventually put the building up for sale. In 2012, Alaska Coach Tours purchased the building for its own needs. Despite some significant inconveniences on their part, Alaska Coach generously agreed to rent the space to Juneau Climbing & Recreation, a newly formed 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation, which continued to operate the Rock Dump in the same space. Without the consent and generosity of Alaska Coach Tours, the Rock Dump would have closed in 2012.
Since that time, Alaska Coach Tours has continued to let the Rock Dump serve as a climbing gym and play space for the Juneau community. The partnership was intended to be short-term, but every year Alaska Coach continued to renew the lease and to subsidize the rent. Again, the Rock Dump would not have been able to remain open for the last 4+ years if it had not been for the support of Alaska Coach Tours.
At this time, Juneau Climbing & Recreation is considering the Rock Dump's long-term options and putting together a business plan to make one of those options a permanent solution. We fully anticipate a fundraising campaign in the near future as one facet of that business plan, and the GoFundMe webpage will certainly be part of that. The premature launch of that webpage unfortunately lead to some confusion and misunderstanding about our relationship with Alaska Coach Tours. We hope this bulletin has cleared that up, and that all concerned members of our community will share our gratitude for Alaska Coach's ongoing support of the Rock Dump. If you have any questions or are interested in helping with future efforts to secure a permanent home for the Rock Dump, please sign up for our mailing list at rockdump.com/jcr
